Poraiti Residence

In a combined effort with Team Architects, Amtech Construction and an inspired client, the team undertook the extensive refurbishment of an early 1980’s house in Poraiti, Napier. The main purpose of the new design was to provide new master bedroom quarters for the client, ensuring the layout took advantage of the vistas of Napier and Hawke’s Bay offered by the site. The remainder of the house was redeveloped to afford spatial relationships and usage to fit the client’s lifestyle needs. The style of the new section is unashamedly modern-the palette of materials and colour scheme were then carried through to the exterior refurbishment. Interior planning emphasizes the indoor-outdoor style of living, totally suited to the location in Hawke’s Bay-the key planning element was the informal gallery area unifying the main formal spaces with the main entry and outdoor spaces.
Ross House

JDTA were asked to design this new residence on a challenging steeply sloping site in Havelock North. It is generally single storey but does have a first floor retreat that separates the master bedroom, en-suite, study and storage from the remainder of the building. It is clad in cedar weatherboards complemented by dark coloured Shadowclad. The building sits comfortably in its woodland setting, partly through use of suitable materials and colours, and partly through cutting the building into the existing hillside.
Glen Aros Cottage

The cottage was designed to compliment Glen Aros Homestead, an earlier Heritage project, also designed by the practice. It was an unusual brief where the building had to cater in a lavish way for the estate managers on the ground floor and guests from the homestead on the first floor. The design relates to the American Style bungalow aesthetic of the homestead and incorporates carefully considered detailing throughout. The building adds to this special composition comprising three integrated buildings set in a fully landscaped whole.
Goldie House

This house was designed to frame spectacular views of vineyards and forest to the north-east, the sea to the east and rolling hills to the south. It incorporates external spaces that relate to these views and allows for use of alternative external spaces depending on wind direction and sun position. The main living space is a powerful form with a curving end wall and high sloping ceilings. Careful selection of materials, well considered detailing and good use of colour contribute to the success of the project.
Turfrey/Foster Townhouses

This house was designed to maximize views from the first floor living area across to the coast, to provide first floor external spaces, to present a strong visual presence on the long entrance side of a relatively narrow corner site, and to create an interesting internal route up to the main living and sleeping spaces. The project was successful and the practice is currently working on a two townhouse project for the same clients in conjunction with two additional parties. The project was completed on time and within budget.
Wootton House

The design for this residence had to meet the clients requirements and to comply with Design Guidelines set up by the developer to assist in retaining the character of the overall development. Good working relationships between all parties resulted in a classical design that sits perfectly on its section at the south end of the development. The U shaped plan has glazed circulation routes around a space established to house a Japanese garden. A modern staircase in a glazed surround provides a balance to the building form. The building has a solidity due to its external wall thickness and use of an aerated concrete cladding system along with areas clad in stone.
