Copas Family Trust Premises – Munroe Street Frontage Upgrade

This tired and disjointed set of commercial buildings required an upgrade to the frontages. Working together with the client Allan Copas, JDTA provided a modern, unified and integrated frontage across three buildings comprising the Copas ownership. The style and colour scheme has been appropriately but not overtly influenced by Napier’s Art Deco heritage so that the Copas buildings can fit comfortably with the central character of the city. This has provided a new lease of life for the buildings and their occupants, as well as stimulating subsequent regeneration in the local area. Awards Gisborne Hawke’s Bay Architecture Award.
Commercial Tenancies

This project was to form new showroom / warehouse units in the former existing PDL building at 81 Austin St, Napier. The remodelled building was tenanted quickly and JDTA provided services to all three tenants during their respective fit-out projects. The development provided an interesting design at a completive overall price for the developer.
Judd Dougan Team Architects – New Studio

In relocating to a prominent location, Judd Dougan Team Architects (formerly Judd Fenwick Team Architecture) required a modern building that sat comfortably on the edge of Napier’s Art Deco heritage district. The resulting design is a 21st Century building which strongly expresses the quadrant shape of the site, incorporating modern material solutions to keep out passing vehicle noise with subtle Art Deco design features blended in. The interior design is based on an open plan layout with flexibility to respond to future advancements in technology.
Scanpower Ltd. – Administration Building

This project was to convert an existing run down staff facilities building into new executive offices for Scanpower Ltd, the electrical supply company for the region. The accommodation included a new board room, meeting rooms, open plan and cellular offices, a cafeteria, a gymnasium and kitchen facilities. Separate lettable tenancies with access from the back of the building were also formed. Most of the building is clad in aluminium panels with an expressed jointing system and the aluminium sun louvres included on the north and west sides complement the overall aesthetic. A long canopy with in-ground lighting at floor level and landscaping on each side provides a special sense of arrival at this headquarters building.
Print Solutions – Redevelopment

As part of the ongoing regeneration of the fringe commercial zone in Napier, the relocation of Pronto Prints (now Print Solutions) involved transforming a 1960s warehouse and adjoining 1970s offices into a modern complex. Being located on one of the busiest corners in Napier (between Carlyle and Tennyson St) the design warranted a striking building form and strong colours, with the latter reflection the operation of the occupants and their primary logo. The bold use of colours strongly accentuates the external design for the premises which were conceived as a response to the bland and lacklustre buildings that existed previously – an attempt to make a much greater visual impact, and to reinforce the client’s unified and different identity. Studio Director, Tim Judd worked with both the building’s owner and Pronto Print to rationalise, enlarge and wrap the existing structures to suit the specific requirements of the copying and printing operation – including all interior planning and design. Awards NZIA local design award and an NZIA colour award
WHK Coffey Davidson – Office Relocation

As part of a joint project with commercial property developers Wallace Development, Judd Dougan Team Architects provided design and documentation services to assist in the relocation and expansion of WHK Coffey Davidson. The move was from the former iconic headquarters of New Zealand Aerial Mapping in Hastings into a totally renovated and reconstructed building. This presented a challenging task in trying to fit a commercial office complex into a set of buildings purpose-built in the 1940s for photography processing. The original building featured a window-less ground floor and as a result required substantial redevelopment of the structure. With the addition of a modern frontage and reception area, as well as the extensive reconfiguration and liberation of the former main building, a light and spacious working and meeting environment has been created for the WHK team of accountants, support staff and clients. The design recognised the historical importance of NZ Aerial Mapping to Hastings, and consequently the scheme has retained and enhanced essential characteristics of the former complex.
